Flynn Wins Bronze at Pan American Games
October 31, 2023 | Track & Field
SANTIAGO, Chile – Mississippi State track and field alum Tiffany Flynn claimed the bronze medal in the women's long jump Monday night at the Pan American Games. She leapt 6.40m to place third behind Colombia's Natalia Carolina Linares (6.66m) and Brazil's Elaine Martins (6.49m).
Â
Flynn opened her series with her best attempt, which trailed only Martins' 6.49m. Martins went on to foul her second, third and fourth attempts before passing her fifth and sixth jumps. Linares opened at 4.63m and immediately followed with a foul. Linares then soared out to her medal-winning distance on her third jump. Flynn fouled her second leap and jumped just 5.80m on her third, but she rallied back to clear 6.00m on her final three attempts while looking to further climb the podium.
Â
State's head track and field coach Chris Woods said, "I'm extremely proud of Tiffany. She's a shining example of what hard work and dedication can bring to a person. On behalf of the entire Bulldog family, congratulations."
Â
The bronze is the State alumna's first major international medal. She previously finished as high as fourth at the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Serbia where she jumped 6.78m. Most recently, Flynn won in back-to-back meets in Croatia and Germany in September. She now has nine top-three finishes in 2023 and is currently ranked No. 24 in the world.
Â
The Ellenwood, Georgia, native is the third Bulldog to win a medal in the past two Pan American Games. In 2019, Marco Arop and Anderson Peters won the men's 800m and men's javelin, respectively, while both posting Pan American Games-record performances.
Â
MSU will see two more Bulldogs compete in Santiago. Jamaica's Navasky Anderson will run the 800m beginning on Friday, and American Curtis Thompson will throw the javelin on Saturday.
