Mississippi State Soccer Earns Highest Ranking in Program History in Latest United Soccer Coaches Poll
October 31, 2023 | Soccer
Kansas City, Mo. – Mississippi State soccer continues to make waves in the world of collegiate soccer. Following an outstanding October to conclude the regular season, the Bulldogs moved up three spots the prestigious Top-25 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll. State Soccer has moved up to 18th, the highest United Soccer Ranking in program history for the Maroon and White.
The latest rankings come just ahead of the Bulldog's matchup with Alabama in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament in Pensacola, Fla. The Bulldog's earned the highest seeding in program history of the tournament, grabbing the No. 4 slot and earning a bye for the first time.
The Bulldogs historic October will be remembered by Bulldogs everywhere as the Soccer Dawgs got hot at the right time to end the regular season. October began with a trip to Gainesville, Florida, where Mississippi State captured their first-ever victory in the Swamp, defeating the University of Florida with a score of 1-0. This momentous achievement set the tone for the exceptional month ahead. Just three days later, State continued their dominant streak by capturing the Magnolia Cup from Ole Miss for the fourth consecutive season, all in front of the second-largest crowd in program history.
After a week's rest, the Bulldogs returned to the pitch for a challenging matchup in Lexington, facing the unbeaten and then-ranked 18th Kentucky Wildcats. In an impressive display of skill and determination, Mississippi State secured yet another victory, winning 2-0 on the road. This marked the second win over a top-20 opponent away from home, further solidifying their reputation as a force to be reckoned with in college soccer.
This incredible string of successes led to Mississippi State being named the NCAA Women's Soccer Team of the Week, a testament to their exceptional performance in Lexington, however, the Dawg's unbeaten streak did not end there. A hard-fought 0-0 draw against Vanderbilt kept the Bulldogs unbeaten before they achieved another milestone by defeating 16th-ranked Alabama on the road to break their 28-game unbeaten streak at home. This crucial win moved their October record to an impressive 4-0-1.
The significance of these victories cannot be understated in the context of the Mississippi State Soccer program. The 2-0 win against the 16th-ranked Alabama marked the first time in the program's history that the Bulldogs have won back-to-back matches against ranked opponents. This win also marked their third victory over a ranked opponent on the road, with the second coming just a week prior in Kentucky.
With this remarkable momentum, the Bulldogs now carry a Top-20 ranking into the postseason with a chance of continuing to rewrite the record books in the weeks to come.
A Top-20 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll is not only a testament to the team's success, but also a reflection of the hard work, determination, and dedication of the players, coaching staff, and supporters. It is a historic moment for Mississippi State Soccer, and fans have every reason to be proud.
