October 20, 2023 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Friday that Mississippi State's Jessika Carter was named to the Lisa Leslie Award Watch List. Carter is 1 of 20 honorees on the preseason watch list given annually to the nation's best center.
Â
Carter, a native of Waverly Hall, Ga., earns her place on the Lisa Leslie Award Watch List after being named a finalist for the award after a stellar season last year. Carter's honors last season included being named to the All-SEC Second Team and the SEC All-Defensive Team. Earlier this week, she was named the Preseason All-SEC Second Team.
Â
During her senior season, Carter averaged a career-best 14.8 points per game, had a career-high 65 blocked shots and dished out a career-high 42 assists. She led Mississippi State in scoring, rebounding (7.7 rpg), blocked shots (2.1 bpg) and field goal percentage (57%).
Â
She helped lead the team to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three seasons and helped State become the first team in women's basketball history to advance to the tournament's Second Round after starting in the First Four.
Â
She has scored 1,273 career points in her career and grabbed 804 career rounds. She has also blocked 184 career shots, dished out 78 assists and earned 55 steals.
Â
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds starting today, October 200. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2024 Lisa Leslie Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just five. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Leslie and the Hall of Fame's selection committee, where a winner will be selected.
