Bulldogs Take Two From Tennessee State
January 29, 2023 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's tennis wrapped up a six-match homestand with a doubleheader sweep of Tennessee State on Sunday.
The Bulldogs blanked the Tigers 7-0 in the first match and swept the second 7-0 inside the Rula Tennis Pavilion to improve to 6-0 on the year.
MSU set the tempo in both matches by winning the early doubles point. In the first match of the day, Sydney Hrehor and Emily Surcey dominated their match 6-0, while Chloé Cirotte and Dharani Niroshan took down their opponent 6-0 to clinch the doubles point.
"Today we got a chance to give a few other girls some playing time and they did really well," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "I was very impressed with Emily [Surcey] and Sydney [Hrehor] at the three doubles and it's a long season so we may need some of these girls to step up. So, it was a good sign to see them come in and get it done."
In the second match, the newly formed duo of Maddie Bemisderfer and Maddie McKee dominated their match against Aroa Castillo and Mikalia Coleman 6-0. The win marks McKee's first collegiate career doubles win. Emmanouela Antonaki and Gia Cohen clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Warona Mdlulwa and Daniela Koleva.
Singles play was equally successful for the Bulldogs.
In the opening match Antonaki took down Mdlulwa 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the match, while also dominating her opponent in the second match 6-1, 6-0. With the two wins, Antonaki ties Georgiana Patrasc (2013-16) for the No. 1 spot in the MSU record book in career singles wins. Both Antonaki and Patrasc have 91 career singles wins.
Cirotte continued her dominate play with two singles victories by an outstanding combined margin of 24-3. She has appeared in every singles match for the Bulldogs this year and has gone undefeated in all six matches.
Emily Surcey also went 2-0 on the day. In the first match, Surcey earned the victory after taking the first 6-1, then Tiger Franka Sindicic retired from the match due to injury. For the second match of the day, Surcey dominated her match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jovana Nikolic.
Niroshan clinched the second match for State with 6-2, 6-0 win over Daniela Koleva. Freshman Hrehor earned her first singles victory of her collegiate career with a dominate 6-1, 6-1 win.
Transfer Bemisderfer took down Daniela Koleva 6-1, 6-3 to improve to 2-0 on the year.
In the opening match, Alexandra Mikhailuk defeated Naomi Von Bose 6-2, 6-3. No. 61 Maria Rizzolo dropped the first set 3-6 in the first match of the day but stormed back to take the next two sets 6-1, 1-0 (6).
For the second match of the day, Cohen appeared in the No. 1 spot for the first time this season. TSU's Mdlulwa took the first set 6-3, but Cohen fought back with a dominate 6-1, 1-0 (5) win in sets two and three.
"Overall, we have ten healthy players and we got to play all of them today which may be a first," Greenan said. "In my time here we've never had 10 players. To have all of them play in one day is a lot of fun to see. They're all putting in a lot of work the during practice. They've all earned it, so it's good to be able to get them all out there to play."
With the losses, TSU dropped to 0-4 on the season.
"We love playing at home and the fans make it fun for us," Greenan said. "The girls feed off the energy, so we definitely appreciate them coming out. There was a team from Columbus and we really appreciate them coming out as well."
