Diamond Dawgs Place Two on SEC Pitcher of the Year Watch List

D1 Baseball placed Landon Gartman and Cade Smith on the SEC Pitcher of the Year Watch List
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State Diamond Dawgs placed two pitchers, Landon Gartman and Cade Smith, on the SEC Pitcher of the Year Watch List, announced by D1 Baseball.

Gartman, a junior, transferred to Mississippi State after a successful season at Memphis in 2022. At Memphis, Gartman was a workhorse as he pitched the second-most innings (86) in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and limited opponents to a batting average of .175. He tallied 94 strikeouts and only walked 29 on the season. He had a record of 7-1 and was the AAC Pitcher of the Year.
Smith, a junior, led Mississippi State's pitching staff in 2022. He pitched 72.1 innings last year and held an ERA of 3.86. Opponents only hit .221 off him on the season, and he tallied 66 punchouts, the second-most on the team. He had four wins. He only allowed 61 hits to opponents. Last season during the opening weekend, he struck out six in 5.2 innings and only allowed one run off on hit.
The Diamond Dawgs have had the fourth-ranked transfer class and the second-best freshman class, as announced by D1 Baseball.
The 2023 season gets underway on Feb. 17 when the Diamond Dawgs host VMI in a three-game series at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville.
Mississippi State's 56-game schedule features 33 home games, 16 road contests, and seven neutral-site matchups. The schedule features a pair of lengthy homestands, as Dudy Noble Field hosts an 8-game homestand to open the campaign (Feb. 18 - 26), followed by nine straight home games from March 21-April 4.
