State Completes First Meet of 2023 Campaign

BIRMINGHAM – Mississippi State track and field posted a strong start to its 2023 indoor campaign, featuring 12 victories and multiple Top-5 finishes at the Blazer Invite in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday.
On the track, Rosealee Cooper made her mark with a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.23) and a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.48). The Bulldogs also saw a 1-2 finish from Hayley Ogle (2:52.43) and Hunter Anderson (2:55.46) in the 1,000-meter run.
The men were red hot in the 60-meter dash, placing four in the Top-6 behind a first-place effort from Cameron Crump (6.71) and a second-place mark from Shamar Rose (6.72). The men's distance runners had a strong showing as well, with Tyrese Reid winning the 600-meter run in 1:17.96, Lee Eppie (1:02.20) and Anthony Brodie (1:02.56) going 1-2 in the 500-meter run and Daniel Joyce pacing the pack in the 1,000-meter run (2:25.03).
MSU wrapped up the day on the track in style, breaking the Blazer Invite record in the men's 4X400 with a scorching time of 3:12.98 behind solid legs from Eppie, Brodie, Rose and Reid.
Mississippi State's throwers and jumpers had a big day in the season opener. Jhordyn Stallworth took first in the women's weight throw (18.09m/59-04.25) and second in the shot put (14.75m/48-04.75), while Daniel Pepper won the men's weight throw with a toss of 17.92m/58-09.50.
Tony Jones took second in the high jump, leaping 2.11m/6-11.00 in his first meet as a Bulldog, while Asia Poe flew to a second-place finish in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.95m/19-06.25. Maddy Kish and Emma Hunt impressed in the pole vault, each jumping 3.91m/12-10.00.
MSU is set to return to the Birmingham CrossPlex on Jan. 20-21 when it participates in the Samford Open. A full schedule and heat sheets will be available at a later date.
