Wadsworth Secures First Career SEC Weekly Honor, Team’s Second of Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After eight collegiate games, Maggie Wadsworth has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
"We are pleased for Maggie to receive this recognition for her important contributions in both games this past week," head coach James Armstrong said. "She continues to work hard to improve day by day."
The Flowery Branch, Georgia, native already leads the team in goals (4), points (10) and game-winning goals (3), and she is tied for the team lead in shots on goal (11). Her third goal of the season came in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, against in-state foe Southern Miss (9/8). Three days later, the freshman would net the team's third goal of four total scored against Presbyterian (9/11) to help push the team's unbeaten run to eight straight.
Not only did the freshman score in the final non-conference match of the 2022 campaign, but her second assist of the season helped set up the opening goal of the match, and the quickest goal MSU has scored all season.
"To have two freshmen of the week honors so far this season demonstrates how prepared this class was coming in," Armstrong added.
State has seen at least one player earn weekly honors from the SEC in eight straight seasons and has picked up a pair of honors in five of the of the last six years.
Wadsworth and the unbeaten Bulldogs get set to open SEC play, at home Friday night ( Sept. 26) against Arkansas (5-1-1). Kickoff against the Razorbacks is set for 6:30 p.m. CT, and the match will be broadcast on SEC Network+. Admission is free to all Mississippi State soccer home matches.

Four weeks into the 2022 season, Wadsworth's recognition marks the second time a Bulldog has earned Freshman of the Week honors. It's now the sixth time in five years that a Bulldog has been chosen as the league's Freshman of the Week.
