Dawgs Stay in South Beach, Prepare for FIU
August 20, 2022 | Soccer
MIAMI, Fla. – The Mississippi State soccer program will make the short, 17-minute drive west to face the FIU Panthers on Sunday morning (Aug. 21). The final match of the season-opening road trip will kick off at 10 a.m. CT.
Â
"We are excited to challenge ourselves versus a very good soccer-playing team to conclude our road trip," head coach James Armstrong said.
Â
It will be only the second meeting ever between the Bulldogs and Panthers, and the first since 2003 when MSU won in double overtime. Sunday's match marks the first time the two programs have faced off in Miami.
Â
FIU opened its season with a 2-1 loss to Louisiana. The Panthers held a one-goal advantage into the second half before giving up the pair of goals across a nine-minute stretch. While the visiting Bulldogs are coming off a scoreless draw in the season opener at Miami, it wasn't for a lack of trying. MSU fired off the most goals and shots on goal in two years.
Â
The Maroon and White's 26 shots and 11 shots on goal were the most in a single match for MSU since 2019 against LSU. The four shots logged by Miami was tied for the fewest shots State allowed in a match since a 2021 matchup against Louisiana (Aug. 22).
Â
Â
Junior goalkeeper Maddy Anderson recorded her seventh career shutout at Miami, and now sits in a tie for seventh place on the MSU career list for shutouts.

ATTACKING THE AVERAGE
After averaging 12 shots a game for all of 2021, Mississippi State registered more than double the shots in its first game of the 2022 season. State's seven corners in the opening half alone, against Miami, also eclipsed last season's average, where MSU recorded four per game.Â
