Peters Unleashes Monster Qualifying Mark, Thompson Advances

EUGENE, Ore. – Anderson Peters needed just one throw. The reigning World Champion in the men's javelin out of Mississippi State released an 89.91m effort, which was more than six meters beyond the automatic qualifying mark (83.50m).

It was Peters' fourth event with a throw beyond 89.00m this season. The Grenadian has thrown 90.00m three times with a season-best 93.07m, which is the current world lead.

American Curtis Thompson opened with an 81.73m throw on the same track where he previously won an NCAA title for the Bulldogs. That would remain his best mark after tossing 81.50m on his second attempt and fouling his third.

While he did not achieve the automatic qualifying mark, Thompson was among the top 12 throwers, finishing eighth overall. He will join Peters in the men's javelin final on Saturday, July 23 beginning at 8:35 p.m. CT.

American Tiffany Flynn will be the final Bulldog to open competition when the women's long jump preliminary rounds begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Joining Peters, Thompson and Flynn on Saturday will also be Canadian Marco Arop, who will run in his second career World Championships 800m final at 8:10 p.m.
