Davidson Selected In Athletes Unlimited College Draft
May 04, 2022 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Mia Davidson was selected in the 2022 Athletes Unlimited College Draft on Wednesday afternoon as one of 13 student-athletes invited to the league. Davidson becomes the 12th Bulldog to be selected in a professional draft.
"It was something special because I've been working for it my whole life," Davidson said. "It's always been a dream to play pro, and getting to do it is very exciting. It's one of my little checklists I can mark off. I think it's super exciting and important for women. Our sport's growing so rapidly. You can tell people watch it. The Women's College World Series showed that. I think having opportunity for young women that's going to keep growing is super exciting, and I'm glad I'm a part of it."
Athletes Unlimited selected 13 collegiate players nationally to invite to the league's third season. Players with Athletes Unlimited are not locked into a single team. They play as individuals on new teams that are drafted each week and collect points for themselves similar to fantasy sports. The top four scorers following each week are named captains and select the teams for the following week's games.
"I'm super excited for Mia and for the opportunity for her to be honored with the recognition and be drafted as one of only 13 players to be picked by the league," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "I think it's a great recognition for her hard work, her talent and what's she's done and meant for this program over the past five years. We're really proud of her and excited for her and excited for the opportunity for her to continue to play."
The Hillsborough, North Carolina, native has had an outstanding collegiate career. She enters the final week of the regular season two starts shy of the school record and one home run away from becoming the sixth player in NCAA history to hit 90 career home runs. This season, she has put together the fourth 20-homer campaign in MSU history and her 20 long balls lead the SEC and rank fifth nationally.
Davidson leads MSU with a .411 batting average, which is sixth in the SEC, this season. Her .953 slugging percentage is sixth nationally and would be an MSU single-season record. Meanwhile, her 123 total bases are ninth in the nation and her .585 on-base percentage is fourth.
She is currently a career .359 hitter with a .789 slugging percentage. Her .953 slugging percentage this season would break her previous school record by 70 points.
Davidson plays her final regular-season series at home on May 6-8 when Mississippi State hosts No. 19 LSU. Her Senior Day recognition is scheduled for Sunday's game at noon CT.
