Small is scheduled to make his MLB debut on Monday versus the Cubs
STARKVILLE – After posting a 1.88 earned run average in 38.1 innings at the Triple-A level this season, former Mississippi State baseball lefthander Ethan Small received the call-up to Major League Baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers announced Monday (May 30).
Small is the 65th Diamond Dawg player to reach MLB and joins Konnor Pilkington, his teammate on MSU's 2016 SEC Championship squad, as the second former Bulldog to earn his first call-up this season. Pilkington made his MLB debut on April 15 for the Cleveland Guardians.
Small is scheduled to make his first career MLB start on Monday versus the Chicago Cubs and will become the seventh former MSU student-athlete from the 2016 team to make his big-league debut. He is also set to become the 13th Diamond Dawg to make his first MLB appearance since 2016.
The Lexington, Tennessee, native finished his Diamond Dawg career ranked No. 3 in career strikeouts (318) and was one of just six MSU pitchers to register multiple 100-strikeout seasons during his time in Starkville. In 2019, Small was named the National Pitcher of the Year by the College Baseball Foundation and American Baseball Coaches Association.
Small was selected in the first round (28th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2019 MLB Draft, joining an 11-player Diamond Dawg draft class, which is tied for the program record. He will join former Diamond Dawgs Brandon Woodruff and Hunter Renfroe on Milwaukee's active roster.
Milwaukee will face the Chicago Cubs twice on Monday, beginning with the first game set for 12:05 p.m. CT in a game that will see Small make his MLB debut.
