No. 17 Broska Falls Following A Three-Set Battle
May 23, 2022 | Men's Tennis
URBANA, Ill., – No. 17 Florian Broska battled hard and claimed the first set against seventh-ranked All-American Stefan Dostanic of USC in the opening round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday.
But Broska saw his Mississippi State career come to a close following a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 defeat at the hands of the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year.
"It was a tough match for 'Flo' today against one of the best players in college tennis right now," said MSU head coach Matt Roberts. "He had a great start and played very sharp the first set. His opponent elevated his level in the second set and from there it was difficult for 'Flo' to get back into the match."
Broska was the 18th Bulldog to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship multiple times during their career. Broska reached the second round at the event last year.
The graduate from Eitelborn, Germany finished the season with a 21-14 singles record. His 21 victories and seven wins over ranked opponents tops the team in both categories along with Nemanja Malesevic.
Broska concluded his Bulldog career with 97 singles victories, which tied Matthieu Ballay (1996-99) for the sixth-most in school history. He also racked up 167 overall wins during his five-year career, which matched Romain Ambert (2001-04) for eighth in the MSU record books.
"Flo has improved more than any player I have coached," Roberts said. "From playing No. 6 singles his freshman year to being ranked top 25 his last two seasons, he has a great story and legacy that he will leave behind at Mississippi State University. I look forward to seeing him grow and develop even more on the pro tour next year."
With the win, Dostanic improved to 36-5 on the year and 18-1 during dual-match play.
