Purcell Continues to Strengthen 2022 Signing Class With Addition of Gony
May 02, 2022 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – The 2022-23 Mississippi State women's basketball roster continues to take shape this Spring as head coach Sam Purcell has announced the signing of Nyayongah Gony, pronounced Nye-YUN-guh GO-knee, to the 2022 signing class.
Â
Gony is transferring to Mississippi State after spending the 2020-21 season at the University of Miami and will have four years of eligibility remaining due to the additional covid year granted to student-athletes who competed during the 2020-21 season.
Â
Nyayongah Gony | 6-4 | Forward | Lincoln, Neb. | Lincoln High School | University of Miami
Get To Know Nyayongah
During her freshman season at Miami, Gony appeared in 22 games for the Canes and was the only freshman to see playing time in Coral Gables. She scored in 15 of the 22 games she played in and had a season-best 13 points at Syracuse on Jan. 17. Despite being a forward, Gony showed the ability to shoot the three as a freshman. She led the Hurricanes in 3-point shooting, hitting 32.7% of her shots (min. 50 attempts) that she took from beyond the arc. She made her collegiate debut on Nov. 25, 2020, when Miami took on Jacksonville.
Â
Gony, who didn't start playing basketball until the sixth grade, was rated a four-star prospect by both espnW HoopGurlz and ProspectsNation.com and was ranked the No. 56 overall recruit in the class of 2020 and the No. 13 ranked forward. She was the top recruit in the state of Nebraska and earned Nebraska Class A All-State Honorable Mention honors as a senior. Basketball runs in the Gony family as her older sister, Nyagoa Gony, recently graduated from Purdue and was a four-year member of the women's basketball team. During her sophomore season at Lincoln High School, Gony and her sister helped lead their team to the state tournament for the first time since 2004 and as a junior she earned First Team Class A All-State honors.
Â
At 6-foot-4, Gony has guard like skills and possess the length to be a matchup nightmare for just about every defender that will try and match up with her.
Â
Purcell on Gony
"Our staff is so excited to add someone as talented as Nyayongah Gony to our roster next year. She comes from a great program in Miami and she understands what it takes to win and compete for championships. She has great length and size that fills a need to balance our current roster while also bringing a unique skill set to the court with her ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter and cause trouble on the defensive end with her length. We are excited to have her join our program."
