Men's Tennis Falls To Ole Miss
April 03, 2022 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State recorded a top 15 win in doubles and a pair of singles victories on Sunday, but it was not enough for the Bulldogs to prevail against rival Ole Miss.
The 43rd-ranked Rebels managed a 5-2 win in front of a season-best crowd of 326 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
"We didn't take the chances we had in doubles and when you give your rival a chance to get back into it, they will take it," said head coach Matt Roberts. "After that, we had our back against the wall and didn't handle our emotions as well as we should have. When the guys want to win too bad, it affects the way they deal with stress and how they play with belief."
No. 35 MSU (13-9, 3-6 SEC) netted an upset in doubles as Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler earned a 7-5 victory against 12th-ranked Lukas Engelhardt and Finn Reynolds.
However, the Bulldogs were edged in a pair of tiebreakers that provided Ole Miss with the doubles point. Carles Hernandez and Nemanja Malesevic fell 7-6(5) to Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk while Alberto Colas and Davide Tortora dropped a 7-6(4) decision to John Hallquist Lithen and Nikola Slavic.
In singles, Tortora took down Jakob Cadonau in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 and Ramskogler was a three-set winner over Engelhardt. Ramskogler lost a first-set tiebreaker 7-6(4) but battled back to claim the next two 6-2 and 6-4.
Broska and Colas also forced their matches to three sets. Broska, ranked 39th in singles, lost the first set 6-4 to No. 36 Slavic before bouncing back with a 6-4 win in the second. Slavic prevailed in the final set, 6-3, to clinch the match for Ole Miss.
Colas dropped his first set to Junk 6-0 but rallied for a 7-5 win in the second before Junk emerged with a 7-5 victory in the final set.
No. 72 Malesevic fell to 112th-ranked Reynolds 7-5, 6-2 and Hernandez was defeated by Hallquist Lithen 6-4, 7-5 as Ole Miss snapped its six-match skid, improving to 2-7 in the league and 12-10 overall.
"It's a match to learn from," Roberts said. "We have a few guys that need to dig deep and start playing more freely and trusting themselves."
The Bulldogs are back on the road Friday as they travel to Arkansas for a 6 p.m. match.
