Softball Falls In Extras To No. 24 Missouri
April 10, 2022 | Softball
STARKVILLE – A wild ballgame in Starkville ended with Mississippi State dropping an 8-5 extra-inning contest to No. 24 Missouri. The game saw four reviews, a run taken off the board for improper substitution and another added back to the scoreboard for obstruction.
Â
"It was a different game, and I like that we're disappointed in it," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "We know that Missouri is a team we can compete with and beat, a ranked team that has gone far in the postseason before. That's the big picture we are looking at. We are looking at how far we have come from last year playing these teams and where we are at now, and not being satisfied and continuing to learn and grow."
Â
Missouri (24-15, 4-7 SEC) scored in the first inning, but upon further review, the second run coming home was called out. State (26-14, 7-5 SEC) tied the game in the bottom of the second on a Riley Hull single and later took a 4-3 lead on Jackie McKenna's three-run homer in the third.
Â
The Tigers chipped away and appeared to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth, but Missouri used the wrong pinch runner who had not been entered on the lineup card and the go-ahead run was taken off the board. In the next frame, however, Missouri did take a one-run lead.
Â
Down her final strike with two-outs in the seventh, Addison Purvis dropped a single over the third baseman's head to score Chloe Malau'ulu and send the game to extra innings.
Â
"I liked that we fought back at the end," Ricketts added. "It's huge. We know we are going to have tight games down the line in the season. To know that we are confident enough in our offense and anyone up and down the line up to be able to come through when we need it is reassuring."
Â
Missouri hit a two-run homer to take a lead and added another on an inside-the-park home run after obstruction was called on review on the play at the plate.
Â
"A huge difference. The mindset shift has been the biggest part of it. Also, having the confidence and the understanding that we are good enough to compete, but it is going to take a consistent effort everyday."
Â
Samantha Ricketts on catching Missouri's illegal substitution…
"It was interesting. [The umpire] tried to give the change to the dugout when I was out talking to the defense, and the changes have to come to me. When I came in, one of our managers mentioned, 'She had a change, and I thought she said No. 0.' [The umpire] repeated the change, and we noticed it was the wrong number on the base. We waited a play to see what happened, and after she scored, that's when I asked [the umpire] to check it. She had written down No. 0 was the player entered, and it was No. 6 that had scored. By rule, that's an illegal substitution, and she's out."
Â
Jackie McKenna on the team's more-balanced lineup…
"I think everyone is contributing. Everyone knows what their role is. We've been a lot more competitive in the box, and we've been working extremely hard for that."
Â
Addison Purvis on her game-tying hit…
"I knew that I wasn't going to leave it up to the umpire. I was going to do it myself. I was hoping it was going to land. I saw it get over the third baseman, and I was really hoping it was fair. We just don't want to give up. We never give up, we're always fighting for what we know we have, and we know our roles."
