MSU Unable To Sustain Momentum At No. 7 South Carolina
March 18, 2022 | Men's Tennis
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mississippi State men's tennis seemed poised for an upset at seventh-ranked South Carolina after winning five first sets in singles play on Friday.
But the 28th-ranked Bulldogs were denied their sixth-straight win over the Gamecocks as South Carolina rallied for a 5-2 victory to remain undefeated (11-0) at home this season.
"Winning five first sets was a good push," said MSU head coach Matt Roberts. "However, we need to get more comfortable dealing with the momentum to make their final push to close out certain situations. South Carolina did a better job pushing back when we had momentum. They are a tough team and well coached. We will build from these teachable moments. The guys are hungry and getting closer and closer as a team with these tough road matches. It is what we need to create our trust in each other when moments get big."
MSU (11-7, 1-4 SEC) forced three sets in four of the singles matches but No. 81 Nemanja Malesevic and Alberto Colas were the only Bulldogs that managed to emerge victorious inside the new Carolina Indoor Tennis Center.
Malesevic earned his fifth singles win over a ranked opponent during dual match play. He defeated 86th-ranked Toby Samuel 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-3 to improve to a team-best 14-3 this spring.
Colas claimed a straight-set victory against James Story 6-4, 6-4.
No. 25 Florian Broska, Carles Hernandez and Gregor Ramskogler also saw their matches stretched to three sets but fell short in the end. Broska fell to No. 16 Daniel Rodrigues 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 while Hernandez lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Connor Thomson and Ramskogler dropped his to Raphael Lambling 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Davide Tortora was also defeated by Jake Beasley 6-2, 6-4 as South Carolina improved to 3-2 in the conference and 14-4 overall.
The Gamecocks also gained the doubles point as the 30th-ranked duo of Rodrigues and Thompson took down Broska and Ramskogler in a close 7-5 decision while Lambling and Story were successful against Colas and Hernandez 6-2.
"We competed very well today and gave ourselves a chance after losing the doubles point," Roberts said.
The Bulldogs have another top 10 battle upcoming on Sunday as they take on top-ranked Florida at noon CT.
