Men's Tennis Falls At Top-Ranked Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla., – Mississippi State men's tennis concluded a four-match road trip with a loss to top-ranked Florida 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Gators were the third opponent the 28th-ranked Bulldogs have faced this spring that has held the No. 1 ranking joining TCU and Tennessee. MSU has already met five of the top 10 teams currently in the ITA rankings and played eight opponents ranked among the top 25.
MSU (11-8, 1-5 SEC) fought Florida hard for the doubles point to start things off. Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler defeated the Gator duo of Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton 6-3 to even things out in doubles and turned the attention to a ranked match-up to decide which team received the early momentum.
The Bulldogs' 65th-ranked team of Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora took things down to the wire against No. 54 Andy Andrade and Mattias Siimar but ultimately dropped a 7-5 decision. It was only the third time Malesevic and Tortora have tasted defeat in their last 17 matches together.
In singles, Alberto Colas was the lone competitor from State to stretch his match to three sets. Colas took the first set 6-4 against Josh Goodger but fell in the second 6-4 and lost the final set in a super tiebreaker 10-7.
Broska, Malesevic, Ramskogler and Carles Hernandez all dropped matches to ranked opponents. Top-ranked Ben Shelton beat No. 25 Broska 6-1, 7-5 while No. 81 Malesevic was downed by 56th-ranked Riffice 7-5, 6-4. Ramskogler lost to No. 93 Andrade 6-3, 6-3 while Hernandez fell 6-3, 6-0 to No. 109 Duarte Vale.
Will Grant defeated Tortora 6-4, 6-4 as the Gators improved to 6-0 in SEC play and 14-2 overall.
Mississippi State is finally back at home on Friday for the first time since March 6. The Bulldogs are set to host unranked Alabama at 3 p.m.
