Dawgs Drop SEC Opener at #10 Georgia

ATHENS, Georgia – No. 23 Mississippi State (11-8, 0-1 SEC) fell in the SEC opener at No. 10 Georgia (15-3, 1-0 SEC) by a score of 11-0 on Friday (March 18) at Foley Field in Athens.
Georgia led 4-0 after five innings before putting together a 7-run inning in the eighth to secure the victory over State in the conference opener.

Georgia starter Jonathan Cannon (4-1) earned the win for the host Bulldogs after holding Mississippi State to no runs on three hits in 8.0 innings. Cannon struck out nine and did not issue a walk in the outing. Nolan Crisp came on in relief for Georgia in the ninth and closed out the SEC opener.
Preston Johnson (2-1) started for the Diamond Dawgs and was charged with the loss despite tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts and only issuing one walk on the night. Johnson allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits in 6.0 innings. Cam Tullar came on in the seventh and pitched one scoreless inning of relief. Mikey Tepper and Cole Cheatham each pitched in the eighth for MSU.
Georgia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the second following a leadoff home run to centerfield by senior LF Connor Tate. Georgia extended the lead to two in the third on an unearned run when Chaney Rogers led off the inning with a single through the right side and later scored on an error by MSU.
In the fifth, Georgia mounted a two-out rally with a single by Fernando Gonzalez followed by a two-run home run by leadoff hitter Ben Anderson. The Bulldogs from Athens sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth and plated seven runs on a trio of hits, three walks and an error.
MSU's Jess Davis, Logan Tanner and RJ Yeager each had one hit apiece on the night. Georgia out-hit State, 8-3, on Friday, while both teams stranded four runners each in the contest.
