No. 19 Bulldogs Take Two From Tennessee Tech

STARKVILLE – No. 19 Mississippi State wrapped up an eight-match homestand to start the season in with a doubleheader sweep of Tennessee Tech in men's tennis on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs claimed a 6-1 victory in the first match and swept the second 4-0 inside the Rula Tennis Pavilion to improve to 7-1 on the year.

"I think everybody is doing really well and showing a lot of resilience," said head coach Matt Roberts. "Overall, it was just an awesome day and I'm proud of the team."

MSU set the tempo in both matches by winning the early doubles point. The veteran duo of Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler downed the nation's No. 38 team of Mika Berghaus and Elias Grubert 6-1 in the opening match. Broska and Ramskogler also beat Evzen Holis and Andre Rodeia 6-1 in the afternoon match.

Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora followed suit with a win over Holis and Rodeia 6-1 and also upset the ranked pairing of Berghaus and Grubert, 6-3.

"For us to come out and play that well in doubles and make it that straightforward was very impressive from every court," Roberts said. "That was a great takeaway."

It was also a record-setting day on the singles side for Broska. The graduate from Germany ascended from 10^th to eighth on the school's all-time singles wins chart.

Broska, who is ranked 22^nd nationally as a singles competitor, beat Berghaus 6-4, 7-5 to tie Per Nilsson (1991-94) for ninth all-time. He then surpassed Nilsson after earning his 92^nd career victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Holis to tie him with Mark Thompson (1977-80) in the MSU record books.

"I'm not really concerned about rankings and career wins and things like that because that's puts a lot of pressure on me," Broska said. "I really don't want to know too much about it. But it's still pretty cool to see and gives me a lot of confidence. But I won't let that distract me from the path that I want to take."

It was the 12^th-straight singles win dating back to the fall. Three of his eight victories this spring have come against ranked opponents.

"It's awesome to see him playing so well and being so clinical at the top position," Roberts said. "He's taking care of business. I'm proud of 'Flo'."

Malesevic clinched both of the Bulldogs' victories on the day, although the first match was played out. The reigning ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year upended Holis 7-6(4), 6-4 and later dispatched Berghaus, 6-2, 6-4.

Ramskogler, Tortora, Bautista Vilicich and Alberto Colas also earned a singles win against the Golden Eagles (0-4). Ramskogler rallied to win over Rafael Tosetto 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. Vilicich won 6-0, 5-7, 1-0(2) against Rodeia and Tortora claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory versus Carlos Vicente.

Colas also earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Vicente in his first singles action since sustaining an ankle injury during the season opener on Jan. 23.

"It was good to see that he was hungry and wanted to play both matches," Roberts said. "It showed that he is healthy and ready to push and contribute. That's a big confidence builder for our team."

State now hits the road for the first time this spring. The Bulldogs will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to take on fourth-ranked TCU on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
