MSU Golf Family to Participate in Scottie’s Birdies Campaign for Spring Season
February 04, 2022 | Men's Golf, Women's Golf
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State men's and women's golf programs will come together to support "Scottie's Birdies," a charitable campaign meant to raise awareness and funds for the fight against pediatric cancer.
This past fall, head men's golf coach Dusty Smith's middle daughter, Scottie, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of cancer that most commonly is found in young children. This spring season, as Scottie continues her fight, the golf programs are asking fans to join them in supporting the Smith family.
Scottie's Birdies is a campaign designed to raise funds as the men's and women's golf teams at Mississippi State make birdies in tournament play. The programs are encouraging fans who are interested to pledge an amount to give for each birdie that the two teams make in the spring season and throughout the postseason. Donations will benefit MD Anderson Cancer Center, where Scottie has been receiving treatment.
The men are scheduled to compete in six regular season events before going to the SEC Championship with the opportunity to earn tee times at the NCAA Regional Championships and National Championships. The women are scheduled to play four regular season events before going into the SEC Championships and could also earn an NCAA berth. The two programs could play in a maximum of 16 stroke play tournaments combined.
In the 2021 calendar year, the men's team averaged 45.2 birdies per tournament, and the women's team averaged 40.4 birdies per tournament. If this trend continues into the spring 2022 semester, then the two teams combined would expect to make approximately 700 birdies over the campaign.
As the season progresses, the teams will be keeping up with the number of birdies made by the five golfers contributing to the team score at each event and will only be counting stroke play rounds.
If the teams shoot the expected 700 birdies this spring, sample pledge amounts are below:
10 cents per birdie = gift of $70
50 cents per birdie = gift of $350
$1 per birdie = gift of $700
$5 per birdie = gift of $3,500
Fans interested in joining the campaign, should visit scottiesbirdies.wixsite.com/give to learn more, participate and donate. Fans can also make a direct contribution to MD Anderson Cancer Center through the same site.
Throughout the semester, the two programs will provide updates on their birdie count. At the end of the season, a representative will reach out to donors to let them know what their pledge amount has totaled.
