Bulldogs Honor Seniors To Closeout Regular Season
February 27, 2022 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – In the regular-season finale, Charlotte Kohl earned her first career double-double with a career-high 18 rebounds as Mississippi State comes up short against Arkansas, 87-79.
Anastasia Hayes led the Bulldogs offensively, finishing with a team-high 20 points to go with six rebounds and two made three-pointers. This marks Hayes' 12th game of the season, scoring 20+ points and it is her 13th game leading MSU in scoring.
Charlotte Kohl had the best game of her career Sunday, finishing with her first career double-double. Kohl recorded 10 points and a monster 18 rebounds. Her 18 rebounds are the most in a game by any Bulldog since Jessika Carter pulled down 21 against Marquette on November 25, 2019.
Ashley Jones had a senior day to remember as she put together her highest-scoring game of her Mississippi State career, finishing with 17 points on 3-3 shooting from behind the arc. Myah Taylor finished the contest with 11 points and seven assists, making this her 17th game of the season, dishing out five or more assists.
JerKaila Jordan finished with 12 points, four rebounds, and two made threes, giving her 20 games this season where she scored in double-digits. The Bulldogs had five players score in double figures for just the fourth time this season. All five Arkansas starters also scored in double-figures.
Despite winning the rebounding battle, 39-36, Mississippi State could not make up for the 27 free throw attempts, 19 makes, by Arkansas compared to MSU's 13. Arkansas would also commit just five turnovers compared to State's 12.
Game Notes:
· Annie's jumper at the 7:39 mark of the first quarter gave MSU its first lead in two games.
· Charlotte Kohl's 18 rebounds are the most rebounds by an MSU player this season. They are also the second-most rebounds in an SEC game by any SEC player during the conference season.
· First career double-double for Charlotte Kohl, finishing with 10 points and 18 rebounds

On Kohl's development
"She was great. I listened to the tail end of her press conference, and it matters to have a teammate, two teammates, the whole team building your confidence up. When she started the year, she had zero confidence that she should be playing here, that she could do anything, that she could catch a ball, and they would go off her hands all the time. She's just had a consistent work ethic. We do believe in her even before we had to believe in her. There's a big difference. You can have someone on your team and then not care a lot about them, and then there could be injuries, and then all of the sudden, we've got to get her ready. We've always been trying to get her ready. Whether the opportunity presented itself or not, it didn't really matter to us. Our goal was to grow her game. Now it happened to be that we really did need her immensely. Even though we are losing some of these games, I love to see her growth not only as a basketball player but in her confidence; her ability to see you in the hallway and say hi first which is a project that we've been working on which is you're an adult now. You can speak first. It's been very gratifying watching her grow up and grow into a very good basketball player."
