MSU Closes Non-Conference Play With Doubleheader

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State 22nd-ranked men's tennis team takes to the courts one last time against non-conference opponents this weekend, hosting Jackson State and Jacksonville State on Sunday.
The first match against Jackson State starts at noon with the Jacksonville State match following at 4 p.m. Both matches are expected to be played outdoors at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
The Bulldogs (7-3) are looking to finish the non-conference season on a high note after a 5-2 loss at home against Florida State last Saturday.
No. 74 Nemanja Malesevic collected yet another singles win this spring when he ousted Florida State's Sebastian Arcila in a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(4) battle. With the victory, Malesevic has now won six straight singles matches and improved his improves his dual match record to 9-1, which currently marks the most singles wins on the team.Â
Malesevic and 39th-ranked Florian Broska each have three singles victories over ranked opponents during dual match play this spring. Broska has won 12 of his last 14 singles matches.
Alberto Colas heads into the doubleheader after a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 win over FSU's Alex Bulte last Saturday.
The Bulldogs also feature the nation's No. 55 doubles tandem of Malesevic and Davide Tortora. That duo has posted a 6-2 mark during dual match play, including three victories over ranked tandems.
Mississippi State has a flawless 5-0 record all-time against Jackson State. All five matches were played in Starkville and the Bulldogs have never dropped a single point against the Tigers.
MSU claimed a 7-0 victory over the Tigers last season.
Jackson State heads into Starkville with a 1-3 overall record. During their last outing, the Tigers dropped a 4-0 decision at home to Alabama State.
Jacksonville State has amassed a 4-2 overall record so far this season. The Gamecocks are currently on a three-match winning streak and during their last contest on Friday, they made quick work of Alabama A&M in a 7-0 decision.
Sunday afternoon's contest marks the first-ever match between the Bulldogs and Gamecocks.
