Corry's Corner - December 2022
December 03, 2022 | Women's Basketball
The month of November has been filled with service, appreciation and gratitude. We hosted a clinic for the Mississippi State SOUP (Special Olympics Unified Program) team. The players led the drills and worked on their coaching skills for the evening. Each player took pride in not just teaching and appreciated what they learned from the SOUP team members.
Some of our players participated in the Starkville school district's National Reading Week the following week. They read to students in their classrooms at Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary School. The experience gave each of them a better understanding of the patience required to be an elementary school teacher. It also was a reminder that sometimes a positive interaction with someone can make our day.

On November 9th, we opened our season and the Sam Purcell era with a home game against Mississippi Valley State. Nearly 5,000 loyal Bulldog fans came to the historic Humphrey Coliseum. Videos do not adequately portray the energy within The Hump. It is loud, and it is electrifying. We have an appreciation for our fans that is hard to express in words. Every player I asked responded simply with, "we love our fans, and we love playing in The Hump."

After playing a few home games, we traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the Puerto Rico Clasico event. The two-game event took place over Thanksgiving break. For most of our program, it was their first trip to the island. When we landed, it was 87 degrees and sunny. We spent Thanksgiving day touring Old San Juan. Small groups walked along the brick-covered roads visiting local shops and eateries. Later, we would celebrate the holiday with a special family-style dinner at Fogo de Chao. While we weren't with our immediate families, we truly appreciated spending time with our Bulldog family.

We played two games at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum. Unfortunately, we finished 1-1, losing our second game in overtime. Even though the loss stung, we remain appreciative of the opportunity to play the game we love on such a beautiful island. As I waded in the ocean water on the morning of our departure, I witnessed three of our players jumping into the clear waves that bordered our hotel. It is those moments that put the game into perspective. They remind us that some wins don't occur on the basketball court but off of it. We returned home a better team who learned to appreciate each other and the opportunities that lie before us.
As November ends, on behalf of our program, we want to express our gratitude to everyone who has, does and will continue to support us. We are grateful to our administration and support staff who, behind the scenes, make everything possible. We are also thankful to our facilities department and game day management crew, who work endlessly to make The Hump the best coliseum in America. We are grateful to our practice players who make us better daily and dedicate time during the break to push us past our limits. We are grateful to everyone who attends our games - home or away. We have the best fans in the country and will never take your support for granted. Lastly, we are grateful for the game of basketball, which has brought us all together, made us a family and created bonds that will last forever.
Thank you Bulldog Fans. 💯🗣💥
