by Matt Dunaway, Director/Communications
Â
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – The time has come for the No. 23 Mississippi State men's basketball program to face its first true road test of the season when the Bulldogs visit Big Ten country and Minnesota on Sunday evening at Williams Arena.
Â
State (8-0, 0-0 SEC) sits as the only unbeaten SEC team, one of three Power 5 schools and one of seven NCAA programs undefeated. Utah State plays Loyola Marymount late Saturday night. Â
Â
Chris Jans is the only first-year coach in the country to remain unbeaten during the 2022-23 season after Missouri's loss to No. 6 Kansas earlier today.
Â
Jans and Missouri's Dennis Gates are two of seven SEC coaches to start their first season at least 8-0 in the shot clock era dating back to 1985-86. Additional active SEC coaches on that list include Kentucky's John Calipari (19-0 in 2009-10) and Arkansas' Eric Musselman (8-0 in 2019-20). Â
Â
One of the staples of a Coach Jans team is all-out effort and a suffocating defense. Through eight games, the Bulldogs are among the nation's best surrendering 49.6 points per game (1st SEC • 2nd nationally) on a paltry 34.5 opponent field goal perÂcentage (2nd SEC • 5th nationally). Coach Jans is the first SEC coach in the shot clock era who team has allowed 55 points or fewer in each of their first eight career games.
Â
Historically at State, the 49.6 points per game allowed and the 34.5 opponent field goal percentage is the program's lowest eight-game totals in the modern era since the 1955-56 season, which was Babe McCarthy's first season with the Bulldogs.
Â
The Maroon and White also is among the SEC/NCAA leaders in 7 additional categories with a 41.0 offensive rebounding perÂcentage (1st SEC • 1st nationally), 16.00 offensive rebounds per game (2nd SEC • 2nd nationally), 43.38 total rebounds per game (2nd SEC • 3rd nationally), 11.63 steals per game (3rd SEC • 4th nationally), a +10.88 rebounding margin (2nd SEC • 7th nationally) and a +20.50 scoring margin (2nd SEC • 15th nationally).
Â
In 16 halves of hoops on the young season, State has allowed 25 points or fewer on 7 occasions and limited the opposition to under a 30 percent shooting clip 5 times.
Â
The Bulldogs have notched a 1.45 assist-to-turnover raÂtio (3rd SEC), a +5.00 turnover margin (4th SEC), held the opposition to a 27.1 three-point percentage (4th SEC) and dished out 15.75 assists per game (4th SEC).
Â
Minnesota (4-5, 0-2 Big Ten) will look to snap a four-game losing skid which includes setbacks to undefeated UNLV (71-62 on 11/23) along with Virginia Tech (67-57 on 11/28) during the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, Purdue (89-70 on 12/04) and Michigan (90-75 on 12/08).
The Golden Gophers three players averaging in double figures headed by Jamison Battle (13.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.8 APG), Dawson Garcia (13.2 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.2 APG) and Ta'lon Cooper (11.6 PPG, 6.9 APG, 4.4 RPG, 1.4 APG). Minnesota's top performer off the bench is Pharrel Payne (8.7 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 1.3 BPG).
Â
SERIES HISTORY VS. MINNESOTA
Sunday's matchup with the Golden Gophers completes a home-and-home series. Minnesota claimed an 86-81 decision in Starkville last season. Iverson Molinar racked up 26 points, while Garrison Brooks secured a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Maroon and White.
Â
The Bulldogs nearly overcome a 14-point first-half deficit and 10-point hole over the contest's last 4:41. Molinar tied the score at 76-76 with 41 seconds left courtesy of an and-one layup. However, Minnesota's Payton Willis countered with the go-ahead triple on the next possession and two free throws down the stretch. Â
