October 18, 2022 | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Anastasia Hayes and Jessika Carter were named to the media's Preseason All-SEC Second Team, the SEC announced on Tuesday. The media vote is made up of select media members from every school.
Hayes, a WBCA All-America Honorable Mention and Second Team All-SEC honoree last season, was named to the media Preseason All-SEC Second Team. Hayes is coming off a stellar 2021-22 campaign where she averaged 18.6 points per game, the third-best average in the SEC. Her 18.6 points per game last season is the highest returning scoring average in the SEC. Last season Hayes scored at least 20-points in 13 of the 25 games she played in, including 10 SEC games. She scored a season-high 31-points in a Bulldog win over Vanderbilt on Jan. 9.
Hayes enters her final year in Maroon and White with some career milestones well within her reach. Hayes, who has scored 1,976 points in her impressive career, is just 24-points shy of 2,000. The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native, who has started 79 consecutive games, scored 464 points and needs just 536 points for 1,000 points as a Bulldog. She has eclipsed 536 points in a season twice in her career. Hayes is also just 54 assists shy of 500 for her career.
Carter, a WBCA All-America Honorable Mention and Second Team All-SEC honoree, also earned preseason All-SEC Second Team accolades by the media ahead of the 2022-23 season. In her career, Carter is averaging 9.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. Carter had a breakout performance as a sophomore. She more than tripled her points per game output from 3.2 ppg to 13.0 and went from averaging three rebounds per contest to just under nine boards per game. The success from her breakout season continued when she again improved her points per game numbers (14.7 ppg) and averaged just under nine rebounds.
Carter, who has recorded 18 double-doubles in her career, is 185 points shy of 1,000 for her Bulldog career. She also has 564 career rebounds, and 119 career blocked shots. The Waverly Hall, Ga. native, has recorded single-game career-highs of 29-points vs Central Arkansas, 21 rebounds at Marquette and six blocked shots vs Jackson State.
