Women's Tennis Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader
January 22, 2022 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE - Mississippi State women's tennis swept its doubleheader with victories over Memphis and Louisiana at the Rula Tennis Pavilion on Saturday.
MSU improves to 3-0 on the season and extends its non-conference home match winning streak to 49 games.
Against Memphis, the Bulldogs secured the doubles point to go up 1-0. The tandems of No. 28 Magda Adaloglou and Chloé Cirotte in the one spot, Emmanouela Antonaki and Tamara Racine in the two spot, and Marta Falceto and Alessia Tagliente in the three spot all won their matches with ease.
Tagliente, the newest Bulldog, secured the first singles point for MSU at the No. 6 spot. It was followed shortly afterward by Antonaki, who took down No. 95 Camila Romero in straight sets on court two. No. 50 Antonaki had previously lost to Romero in a tough three-set match during the fall at the John Cade Invitational.
Cirotte clinched the win for State after taking down fifth-year senior Alisha Reayer in straight sets in the four spot.
Mississippi State set a new attendance record in the new Rula Tennis Pavilion with 190 fans, breaking the previous record of 182 set last Saturday against Jacksonville State.
"It has been so exciting and encouraging to see the stands like this," said MSU head coach Daryl Greenan. "It is great energy coming from it. It keeps (the girls) on their toes and keeps them energized. It definitely helps us."
Meanwhile against Louisiana, the Bulldogs had a moment of déja-vu and secured the doubles point with victories from Adaloglou and Cirotte and Falceto and Tagliente.
Both duos are now 3-0 to start their season.
The singles scoring started with Cirotte and Tagliente securing their matches with ease, each winning 6-1, 6-1 on courts three and five respectively.
Tagliente has not lost a set yet in singles or doubles in her young collegiate career.
"[Alessia] is doing a great job," said Greenan. "She has been a nice surprise and is a treat to coach. She has gelled with her teammates really well. She is getting better every set. She is showing us she knows what she is doing, and it is very encouraging for sure."
Falceto clinched the match for the Bulldogs after taking down Angel Santiago 6-1, 6-2 on court six. Minutes later, both Alexandra Mikhailuk and Racine won their matches to extend the maroon and white's lead to 6-0.
Antonaki closed out the day for MSU with a three-set victory against Lucie Raquin. After losing the first set in a close tiebreaker, the All-American Antonaki dominated the second set 6-0 and secured her win after winning the 10-point tiebreaker 10-6.
"I played (Raquin) at the Fall Regionals and it was also a tough match," said Antonaki. "Once I started playing and moving my feet more, I played a really good second set. I asked my coach and he said I only lost like seven points in the second set, so that is good. It was a little bit tricky with the 10-point tiebreak because everything [comes down to it]. It was a good day."
