Bennett’s Performance in Shot Put Shines at Blazer Invite
January 14, 2022 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Bulldog track and field program broke 10 personal bests on its opening day of action in its 2022 indoor campaign. Jabari Bennett kicked things off in the shot put, throwing the third best mark in MSU indoor history.
"We had a solid showing today, with over 10 personal bests," head coach Chris Woods said. "That shows we have a good foundation now it's important to build upon that."
Bennett threw a 17.65m mark in one of the opening events of the day. It's the first time since Ed Wesela in 2012 that a Bulldog cracked the top-5 all-time men's Shot Put performances. In the women's shot put, Jhordyn Stallworth improved her indoor personal best with a throw of 13.68m.
Emma Hunt and Maddy Kish finished tied for eighth in the women's pole vault, both improving their personal best marks in opening action.
On the track, Cameron Crump and Jesse Henderson each ran to a personal-best time in the men's 60m, with Henderson shaving off up to seven seconds.
In the women's 60m hurdles, a trio of Bulldogs finished in the top five, Shayla Broughton taking the top collegiate finish of the event, with Asia Poe and Cathrina Morris finishing second and fourth, respectively, for collegiate only participants. Poe's time of 8.50 shaved 12 seconds off her personal best.
In the distance events, Sydney Steely finished first in the women's 1000m. State's three runners each finished in the top 10 of that event.
In the men's weight throw, redshirt sophomore Daniel Pepper threw an indoor personal best mark of 17.55m to highlight the event.
MSU also finished first in the men's 4x200m relay, third in the women's 4x400m relay and second in the men's 4x400m relay.
State will return to Birmingham on Saturday, January 15, for the Vulcan Invitational to conclude the opening weekend of the 2022 indoor season.
