Denae Carter Earns Second SEC Freshman of the Week Honor

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's basketball's Denae Carter was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after helping the Bulldogs to a pair of shorthanded SEC wins.
Carter, a native of Philadelphia, was a key piece in helping the Bulldogs win back-to-back games last week with a shorthanded roster. Carter played 69 minutes in two games and was one of four players to play more than 67 of the possible 80 minutes in State's two games last week.
Mississippi State entered Thursday's contest at Alabama with eight players before playing with seven against Vanderbilt. At just 6-0, Carter anchored the post for the Bulldogs, recording 17 rebounds, nine points, three steals, two assists, and two blocked shots across the two games.
Carter recorded her sixth double-digit rebounding performance of the season against Alabama. On the year, Carter has led the team in rebounding nine different times, including each of the last six games. She has led the team in blocked shots eight times this season on the defensive side.
On the year, Carter leads the team in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and blocked shots (31) while ranking third in steals (13) and fifth in scoring (6.8 ppg). Carter's 31 blocked shots rank fourth in the SEC and 19th in the nation. She currently leads all freshmen nationally in blocked shots while also having more than double the number of total blocks than any other SEC freshman this season.
Carter is the SEC's leader in offensive rebounds per game (4.0). She also ranks seventh in the SEC, top 50 nationally, in total rebounds (125). She is second amongst all freshmen for total boards this season.
Mississippi State will be back on the road for two games this week. State will travel to Kentucky on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. to make up the previously scheduled contest from Jan. 3. On Saturday, Mississippi State and Ole Miss will renew their in-state rivalry in Oxford with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m. That game will be on SEC Network.
