Anderson Named SEC Defensive Player Of The Week

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State goalkeeper Maddy Anderson has been named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

The award marks Anderson's second career player of the week honor from the conference, following a 2020 selection. She was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week in 2020. MSU has seen at least one player earn weekly honors from the SEC for seven years in a row.

Anderson posted a .941 save percentage in two overtime matches this week. She allowed one goal in 220 minutes of soccer while facing a combined 32 shots.

"Maddy's been great recently. She had to come up big on a couple of occasions," head coach James Armstrong said. "We're proud of her for that. She's a hard-working young lady that's been doing great in training with Kat [Stratton] and Peyton [York]. Her distribution was great throughout. The biggest thing she did was handle crosses, staying connected with the back four and organizing the back four, which I thought she did a tremendous job of."

Against Minnesota, Anderson posted her then-SEC-leading third shutout of the season. She currently ranks second in the league. In the match at Iowa, she made a career-high 13 saves after entering the match as the SEC's shutout leader this season. She'd made six stops by halftime and added five more before being scored upon. Her previous high was eight saves at Texas A&M in 2020.

Anderson boasts an .879 season save percentage and a 0.62 goals against average. She's made 29 saves this year while allowing four goals in six matches.

Mississippi State returns home on Sept. 10 for a Friday night kickoff against in-state foe Southern Miss. Fans are encouraged to join the team in a black out game as MSU wears its new jerseys at home for the first time. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT with the game airing on SEC Network+.
