Soccer Hosts Kentucky In Nationally-Televised Match
September 29, 2021 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Focus on one. That's the message head coach James Armstrong is preaching as his team heads into a crucial SEC matchup with Kentucky on Thursday night.
Â
Mississippi State and the Wildcats will kick off at 6 p.m. CT in a nationally-televised match on the SEC Network with both teams looking for their first conference win.
Â
"Everybody knows how big it is," Armstrong said. "I think for us as a coaching staff, it's important just to focus on the things we can control, and that's the performance. If the performance is right then the wins start to come. Right now, I think that's been the frustrating part for us is that we feel like we've been really good in games. The girls have done everything we've asked of them, and we haven't been outcompeted in a single game."
Â
The Bulldog soccer program has been right there in each of its last three matches but has ultimately lost or drawn with each opponent. On Sunday night, State (2-4-3, 0-2-1 SEC) showed it's more than capable of creating chances, firing a season-high 20 shots, which was its highest total in an SEC game since late in the 2019 campaign.
Â
On the other side of the ball, MSU limited Florida to just four opportunities, the fewest the Bulldogs have allowed in an SEC match since Kentucky took three shots in 2017.
Â
"[Kentucky] is better than their record shows," Amstrong added. "Obviously, both teams are going into it knowing that a win is important. They're front three are incredibly dangerous and have scored a lot of goals in recent years including this current year. They're organized. They have a good spine to their team and they're stingy in terms of giving up goals."
Â
It's "Soc"-toberfest in Starkville this week, and fans in attendance on Thursday night will receive free MSU soccer drinking mugs and soft pretzels. Admission to Bulldog soccer matches is always free.
Â
The Bulldogs are in the midst of a three-match homestand that will wrap up next Thursday, Oct. 7, when State hosts Auburn at 6:30 p.m. That match will air on SEC Network+.
