DENTON, TEXAS – Julia Lopez Ramirez used her Bulldog debut to rewrite the record books. With a three-day total of 202, she led the Bulldogs to a seventh-place finish on the final day Sam Golden Invitational.
Lopez Ramirez entered the third round of the event tied for 10th before posting seven birdies and an eagle to climb to the top of the leader board. She carded a third-round score of 9-under par (63) to propel her a co-championship finish with a three-round score of 14-under (202). Lopez Ramirez tied with Texas A&M's Blanca Fernandez Garcia-Poggio. The first-place trophy was awarded to Fernandez Garcia-Poggio based on the lowest score on the 18th hole. Fernandez Garcia-Poggio earned a birdie on the par-4 hole while Lopez Ramirez recorded a par.
Lopez Ramirez now holds three Bulldog records, including the lowest third-round individual (9-under par), lowest individual round (9-under) and lowest score after 54 holes (14-under). Lopez Ramirez's 63 in the final round also sets a new Wildhorse Golf Club course record.
"Julia had a spectacular week," head coach Charlie Ewing said. "Anytime you can have that kind of performance in college golf, going 9-under for a round and being co-medalist in a tournament, it's an incredible achievement. But to do it in your debut, I think it speaks volumes to her maturity. She has a lot of belief in herself and an understanding of what makes her successful. It's really exciting to see her start her career this way and I am just really proud of the way she handled herself this week as a freshman."
The Bulldogs used a solid third round of 9-under par to propel to a seventh-place finish as a team. The 9-under third-round carded was the second-lowest third-round score in the history of women's golf at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs finished 11-under (853) for the event, the fifth-lowest team total all-time after 54 holes.
"I thought we came into the day with a little better attitude and on more of a mission," Ewing said. "We wanted to go out there and earn something and achieve something. For the team as a whole, we still want to see more from top to bottom. We hold ourselves to a very high standard, and we want to go into the next tournament with an honest evaluation of where we lost shots and make the adjustments moving forward."
Graduate Valeria Mendizabal finished the event in 27th with a 2-under par score. Redshirt Senior Blair Stockett shot 1-under for the day for a third-round score of 71, which was her best round of the event. Junior Hannah Levi shot an even 72 in the third round to bring her three-round total to 6-over par to finish 56th. Junior Ashley Gilliam also tied for 56th, posting a final score of 6-over par for the event.
Competing individually, graduate Lauren Miller carded a 69 in the final round finishing 3-under par for the event, tied for 24th.
The Bulldogs will return to the course for the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., September 24-26.
