Clegg Earns Highest Honor - Academic All-American

The Bulldog is one of two Division I men’s golfers to earn Academic All-American status and the only First Team selection in the nation.
STARKVILLE – Ford Clegg, the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was named a First Team Academic All-American by CoSIDA on Friday.

The junior carries a 4.0 GPA while majoring in finance. To be eligible, student-athletes must be sophomores or older and boast at least a 3.3 GPA. They must participate in at least 50 percent of their teams' competitions and be a starter or significant contributor as a reserve.

"What a huge honor for Ford to be named a First Team Academic All-American," head coach Dusty Smith said. "This might be the biggest honor you can receive as a student-athlete as it exemplifies both success on the course and in the classroom. I know Ford puts countless hours of work into being the best possible student athlete. He should be very proud."

Clegg was recently one of five Mississippi State golfers to be honored by the Golf Coaches' Association of America as an All-American Scholar. In June, he was selected to the PING All-Region Team. The GCAA requires a GPA of 3.2 and a stroke average under 76.0 to be named an All-American Scholar.

On the course, Clegg led MSU with a 71.17 stroke average this season and five top-10 finishes in 10 total tournaments. He shot par or better in 57 percent of his rounds and posted State's four lowest rounds of the year, including a career-low 63. He is ranked No. 19 in PGA TOUR University's Class of 2022 Summer Ranking.

Mississippi State has earned eight Academic All-American honors since the 2017-18 academic year. Clegg joins MSU football's Austin Williams as student-athletes to be recognized in the 2020-21 year. He is the first Bulldog to be recognized in the sport of men's golf.
