Soccer Returns To Starkville Sunday
August 21, 2021 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – The Bulldogs are back. Soccer returns to Starkville on Sunday, Aug. 22 when Mississippi State hosts Louisiana at 1 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast on SEC Network+ with Chris Nasuti and Anthony Craven on the call.
Louisiana is coming off a Friday night tilt with Prairie View A&M. The Ragin' Cajuns won the match in the final minute, benefitting from an own goal in a match that saw just two combined shots on goal between the teams.
Meanwhile, State enters the match riding a four-game home winning streak after closing the 2020-21 season with three consecutive shutouts in Starkville.
"We are looking forward to playing on our home field in front of our fans," head coach James Armstrong said. "Louisiana have a lot of exciting new players and are very well organized on both sides of the ball. Our girls are excited to play."
Admission is free for all MSU home soccer matches. Fans in attendance on Sunday can look forward to an end of summer luau complete with free pizza and cupcakes. Cowbells are welcome at the MSU Soccer Field, and fans with a cowbell will have a chance to win a $50 gift card.
Mississippi State has applied consistent offensive pressure lately. The Bulldogs are averaging 15.3 shots per game over their last seven matches, dating back to last spring and including exhibitions. They've forced opposing keepers to average 5.1 saves in that span while playing to a 5-1-1 record.
Monigo Karnley scored State's first goal of the year in a season-opening loss at Lipscomb. Karnley has now picked up a point in four of her last five matches with four goals in that span. She is MSU's active career leader in game-winning goals (6), and her next game-winner would land her among the top three in school history.
The Bulldogs remain at home next week for a pair of matches at the MSU Soccer Field. MSU will host Arizona State on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. and Southeast Missouri on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m.
