Soccer Set For Final Exhibition Saturday
August 13, 2021 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's soccer program will get in a final preseason test at South Alabama on Saturday with an exhibition match against the Jaguars set for 2 p.m. CT.
Â
MSU won its first exhibition with UAB, 4-0, on Tuesday. Three different players found the back of the net, and State posted its fourth shutout in its last five games, dating back to the spring portion of the 2020-21 schedule. The Bulldogs went 6-4-3 last year and won their final four matches.
Â
Onyi Echegini scored twice against the Blazers, and Monigo Karnley and Hailey Farrington-Bentil also tallied goals in the match. Miranda Carrasco and Hannah Johnson each picked up assists.
Â
"We are looking forward to continuing to build on this week's training," head coach James Armstrong said. "South Alabama will be a great test to try some new things and see if we have improved on the aspects of the game we have focused on."
Â
MSU returns a veteran roster for Armstrong's third season with 11 seniors on the team. After losing just five letterwinners from last year's team, Armstrong added 11 freshmen and transfer Gwen Mummert from Louisiana. State lost just one player that played more than 150 minutes last season with the departure of senior captain Kristen Malebranche.
Â
Along with veterans including leading scorers Onyi Echegini and Monigo Karnley, the Bulldogs feature a core group of sophomores that gained plenty of experience in their first season. That class totaled 5,531 minutes in 2020-21.
Â
Live stats will not be available for the exhibition season, and the match will not be broadcast. MSU opens the regular season on the road at Lipscomb on Aug. 19 at 6 p.m.
