Nelson Wraps Up Prestigious U.S. Amateur Appearance

OAKMONT, Pa. – Mississippi State's Ben Nelson closed his time at the prestigious U.S. Amateur Championship on Tuesday, with an 11-stroke improvement on his first round.

Nelson shot a 1-under 69 at the Longue Vue Club on Tuesday. He carded five birdies but bogeyed three of his final five holes. He finished the tournament at 9-over.

The rising senior shot 80 at Oakmont Country Club on Monday. Play was suspended on Tuesday after Nelson had already returned to the clubhouse. He will miss the cut as the field is trimmed to 64 for match play following the completion of Tuesday's round. Currently, fewer than 30 golfers have shot under par for the tournament.

Nelson is one of four Bulldogs who have competed at U.S. Amateur events this year. Last week, State's women's golf program was represented at the women's championship by Valeria Mendizabal, who advanced to the second round of match play, along with Lauren Miller and Blair Stockett.
