July 30, 2021 | Track & Field, Olympic Games
TOKYO, Japan – Mississippi State's Marco Arop made an emphatic Olympic debut on Friday night, winning his heat to automatically qualify for the men's 800m semifinals.
Arop led from the lane break at the 100m mark and took control of the race, clocking in at 51.6 seconds through the first 400m. He stumbled slightly in the first turn after the bell, but never surrendered his place, cruising to a 1:45.26 finish that was good for eighth overall.
Brandon McBride took his heat out quickly, sharing the lead at the bell. But Arop's fellow Canadian faded down the stretch and took sixth in his heat with a time of 1:46.32. He finished 29th and did not advance.
Semifinals in the 800m will be contested across three heats on Sunday, Aug. 1 at 6:25 a.m. CT. The first two finishers from each heat along with the next two fastest times across all heats will advance to fill the eight-man field for the final on Wednesday, Aug. 4.
All events can be streamed online on NBCOlympics.com or the NBC Sports app. Nearly-live results are available on Olympics.com along with MSU's State to Tokyo webpage and social media feeds. Tokyo is 14 hours ahead of the central time zone.
