Arop’s Olympic Run Ends In Semifinals
August 01, 2021 | Track & Field, Olympic Games
TOKYO, Japan – Mississippi State's Marco Arop came up short in the men's 800m semifinals at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Sunday morning.
After watching the first heat go out slowly, Arop took his heat out at a much higher pace. With the bubble time sitting at 1:44.84 after one race, Arop's heat reached the 400m mark in 51.0 seconds, more than a second faster than the first heat and half a second quicker than the third.
Unfortunately, the young Canadian, who led from the gun until final 100m, faded off the final turn and fell back to seventh in his heat.
Arop was passed by Australia's Peter Bol who ran to an Oceanic-record 1:44.11 along with American Clayton Murphy who crossed in 1:44.18 for the automatic qualifying spots. Both time qualifiers also came from Arop's heat. Meanwhile, the former Bulldog clocked in at 1:44.90, which was good for 14th.
Marta Pen Freitas will be the next Bulldog on the track, competing in the first round of the women's 1500m at 7:35 p.m. CT on Sunday evening for Portugal.
All events can be streamed online on NBCOlympics.com or the NBC Sports app. Nearly-live results are available on Olympics.com along with MSU's State to Tokyo webpage and social media feeds. Tokyo is 14 hours ahead of the central time zone.
