State Signee Wins Prestigious Nicklaus Award

STARKVILLE – The Jack Nicklaus Award, given to the top collegiate men's golfer at five levels, was handed out at The Memorial Tournament on Sunday.

Ruan Pretorius, who is joining Mississippi State this fall as a graduate transfer from Point University, was the 2021 NAIA recipient.

Pretorius closed his 2020-21 campaign as the No. 1 individual in the final 2021 Golfstat NAIA Rankings and tied for fifth at this year's NAIA National Championship.

The Bloemfontein, South Africa, native finished the year with an adjusted scoring average of 71.53 and went 21-2 against top-25 opponents. His final comparative record in 2021 was 1,261-2.

In addition to the Nicklaus, Pretorius earned his second PING First Team All-American honor this season.

He joins notable former winner of the Nicklaus Award including PGA Tour members Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Justin Thomas. The award has been given annually since 1988, and winners are selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
