STARKVILLE -Â Throughout the 2021 baseball season, HailState.com will catch up with baseball student-athletes to talk about the game, personal favorites and everything that makes them unique. This week, we catch up with freshman Lane Forsythe.
Q: How has your first season gone?
LF: So far, I think my first season has gone pretty well. I have gone from not expecting to be on the field to being the starting shortstop. Batting ninth is always good. [I'm] getting some hits and just playing and having fun.
Q: What has been the biggest adjustment from high school to college?
LF: The biggest adjustment for me has been the velocity. The velocity jump has been big time, going from high school ball to SEC. I have been working on staying more compact with my swing, within myself and more on top of the ball.
Â
Q: You made your first start in the Sunday game against Kent State, and you ended up making a great play for the final out of a no-hitter. Take us back to that day.
LF: I didn't really know that I was getting the start [when I was] coming to the field that day. I got told when I first got there, and I was kind of surprised. I got out there, and I was just trying to have fun and just treat it as a normal day. Making that catch was crazy. I really didn't know that it was a no-hitter until after I caught the ball.
Â
Q: Who was your favorite athlete growing up?Â
LF: I liked Dansby Swanson a lot because one time I went to the SEC Championship and he brought me down on the field and talked to me and hung out with me and [since then] he's kind of been my role model. We have the flow, with the [long] hair and kind of look alike. He's also a good fielder, so I try to model myself after him.
Â
Q: What is your favorite movie?
LF: I really like all the Fast and Furious movies.
Â
Q: With the summer Olympics coming up, if you could compete in one Olympic event, what would it be?
LF: Probably beach volleyball. My little sister plays volleyball, and I just think it's a cool sport and it's fun.
Â
Q: Who is the most athletic guy on the team?
LF: I would probably have to say, all-around athleticism, Brayland Skinner.
