Four Bulldogs punch their ticket to Oregon.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Mississippi State track and field squad had four student-athletes with an opportunity to move on to the Championships in Oregon on day one of the NCAA East Region Prelims, and all four punched their ticket to Oregon.
In the javelin, the Bulldog men had a 1-2-3 finish to qualify for the Championships. Sindri Guðmundsson reclaimed the collegiate lead with a 79.83m throw on his first attempt, taking it away from DJ Jónsson who finished second at 78.51m, just below his personal best. In third was Tyriq Horsford with a season-best 75.51m throw. All three move straight on to Oregon.
Continuing the success was sophomore Cameron Crump, who placed seventh in the long jump to earn his own ticket to the Championships. He qualified with a 7.63m mark.
Jesse Henderson won his heat of the 110m hurdle first round, finishing in 13.57 to update his school record by .07 seconds. He automatically qualified by winning the heat and finished third overall. He will compete in the quarterfinals at 5:45 p.m. CT on Friday.
In the 800m, all three Bulldogs made it through to Friday's quarterfinals. Leon Clarke came in seventh overall at 1:48.81 and automatically qualified as one of the top three in his heat. Navasky Anderson and Gabriel Moronta were in the same heat and both advanced, finishing 16th and 21st overall.
The 200m was the last event of the day for the Dawgs, but it didn't pan out as they wanted. Crump finished in 31st and Shamar Rose came in 39th, meaning they would not qualify for the next round on Friday.
