No. 16 Bulldogs Secure 5-2 Victory At Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In its first road battle of the weekend, the 15th-ranked Mississippi State men's tennis team took care of business Friday, downing Vanderbilt 5-2 in an afternoon showdown at VU's Currey Tennis Center.
With the victory, State improved to 15-7, 5-6 in the SEC, while Vanderbilt fell to 6-14, 0-11 in league play. The Maroon and White has now claimed the last six meetings between the teams, a streak that started in 2017.
The Bulldogs would cruise over the Commodores for the opening doubles point to start things off. Court 2 would finish first, where the MSU team of Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora made quick work of Vanderbilt's' Marcus Ferriera and Adam Sraberg in a 6-2 decision. Giving the Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead – also in 6-2 fashion - was the 52nd-ranked duo of Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler who downed VU's Max Freeman and George Harwell at the top spot in the lineup. At the time of the clinch, Bulldogs Nicolas Ocana and Giovanni Oradini were up 4-3 against Vanderbilt's Jeremie Casabon and Connor Robb-Wilcox on court 3.
Despite trailing 1-0, the homestanding Commodores would put up a fight early on in singles, with the teams splitting the opening sets at three apiece.
Evening the score at 1-1 for Vandy was court 5, where Macsen Sisam downed Bulldog true freshman Carles Hernandez 6-3, 6-2.
Giving the Bulldogs the lead once again was court 3, where Alberto Colas ousted Vandy's Ferriera 6-3, 6-4. Court 2 finished right after when State's 45th-ranked Broska bested the Commodores' Casabon 6-4, 6-3 to put the Bulldogs on top 3-1.
Clinching the match for the Bulldogs would be the 71st-ranked Malesevic. Down a set and knotted 4-4 in the second, the true freshman broke and held to take the second set 6-4 at a critical point in the match, going on to upend VU's Freeman 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot.
The remaining two courts were then played out with the teams trading triumphs.
Finishing next would be court 1, where State's 51st-ranked Oradini gutted out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Vanderbilt's 98th-ranked Harwell. The MSU senior's win moved him into a tie for eighth place all-time at State in singles wins with 91, matching Per Nilsson (91, 1991-94). Wrapping up play on the day was court 6, where Commodore Joubert Klopper edged MSU's Ramskogler 7-6(6), 7-5.
Next upon on the slate, the Bulldogs will head to Lexington, Ky., to meet No. 17 Kentucky this Sunday, April 11, in a 12 p.m. CT battle with the Wildcats.
