BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State track and field's freshman javelin thrower DJ Jónsson has earned his second SEC Freshman of the Week accolade of the season, the Conference announced Tuesday.
Jónsson came in first place for the second-straight meet at Auburn's War Eagle Invitational. He finished with a new personal-best for his young collegiate career, throwing to a mark of 77.33m (253'8") on Friday.
Not only did he win, but his winning throw was a full 6.45m (20 feet and 9 inches) further than the second-place finisher.
The native Icelander remains in the No. 3 spot on the NCAA leaderboard for the javelin with that throw. Teammate and fellow Icelander Sindri Guðmundsson holds steady as the NCAA leader at 77.77m, with Bulldog Tyriq Horsford being sixth in the NCAA at 74.77m.
His throws continue to progress further with each time he competes. At the Bulldog Relays, although the meet was cut short due to weather, he finished with a throw of 74.70m. At the Florida Relays, his furthest mark was 77.25m.
He was previously named SEC Freshman of the Week after his 77.25m throw and subsequent win in Gainesville.
Jónsson and his teammates will have an off weekend from competing and then return to action when they host the Maroon & White Invite on April 30-May 1, Friday and Saturday in Starkville at the Mike Sanders Track Complex.
