Johnson, Clegg Lead Bulldogs To Best Finish Of The Year

WEST POINT, Miss. – Mississippi State's men's golf team carded its highest finish of the season, tying for second at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. The Bulldogs shot 1-under on Sunday to finish at 10-under with a three-day total of 854.

Garrett Johnson and Ford Clegg led State's effort as they tied for sixth place. Johnson capped his final round at Old Waverly with his first top-10 finish of the season, shooting a 2-under 70 on the heels of his 4-under 68 from Saturday. After starting out with a 5-under first round, Clegg carded a three-round total of 15 birdies, the second-most in the field. The pair shot 4-under for the tournament at 212. Â

"I'm really proud of our team and how we handled some tough conditions today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "We showed a lot of toughness and resiliency this weekend which is part of our team DNA. It was great to see all five guys battling today. I really can't say enough about Garrett's round today and his performance over the years at the Old Waverly Collegiate."

Loïc Ettlin posted his highest career finish in a tie for 14th place. The freshman shot his best round Saturday with a 2-under 70 and finished at even par on Sunday.

"We are far from done this season and we need to continue growing and getting better," Smith said. "There are areas in our game that we need to improve if we want to become the team we know we can be. These next few days will be important as we prepare for the next step in our journey."

Hunter Logan finished the tournament at 2-over, tying for 33rd. Austin Fulton tied for 55th and shot an even round on Sunday.

State's individual players Cameron Clarke and William Wann finished the tournament tied for 27th with both carding a 2-over 74 in the final round. Clarke shot a 69 on Day 2 while Wann finished the day with a 68.

Ben Nelson finished the tournament at 1-over. Griffin Agent shot a 2-over 74 in the final round.

For their next event in action, the Bulldogs will travel back to Alabama, this time Shoal Creek for the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.
