Jackson Earns Spot on Cheryl Miller Award Finalist List
February 03, 2021 | Women's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – As one of the top offensive playmakers in the country, Mississippi State's Rickea Jackson was named a finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award, which is given to the top small forward in the nation, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.
The Detroit, Mich., native is one of 10 candidates for the award, which is named after three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list.
The sophomore forward leads the team in scoring with 15.8 points per game on 41-percent shooting. Jackson owns 11 double-digit scoring efforts this season, highlighted by the second 30-point performance of her career in a win against Troy. She is also averaging 4.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. She posted multiple assists in seven games on the year.
In an effort to become a more effective scorer from beyond the arc, Jackson has already eclipsed her total threes made from last year (13) through eight games this season (17). She leads the Bulldogs in 3-pointers made this year. In her performance against Troy, she finished with a career-high six threes and helped State post an MSU-record 18 treys in the contest.
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds, which goes live on Friday, November 13. In early February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award will be narrowed to just 10. In early March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2021 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be presented on Friday, April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, and the Lisa Leslie Center Award.
Jackson earned a spot on the Wooden Award Late Season watch list on Monday, and she is also candidate for both the Naismith Trophy and the Wade Trophy, along with teammate Jessika Carter. Earlier in the week, Myah Taylor was named a Nancy Lieberman Award finalist as one of the top 10 point guards in the country.
