
MSU’s Colas Tabbed Co-SEC Men’s Tennis Newcomer Of The Week

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State men's tennis sophomore Alberto Colas has been named co-SEC Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. The honor is MSU's second weekly league award thus far in 2021, as Florian Broska was named Co-SEC Player of the Week on Feb. 10.
"Alberto is building each week and his results lately have been great feedback for all of his hard work, "MSU head Matt Roberts said. "He has become a great, consistent teammate and sets an example for our team. We are proud of Alberto and what he is doing for the team and program."
After moving up in the Bulldog singles lineup from No. 5 in 2020 to No. 3 in 2021, Colas has easily proven worthy of that move early on this season, having posted a perfect 9-0 ledger while helping lead MSU to an impressive 9-1 start and Top 25 ranking to start the '21 campaign.
The Zaragoza, Spain, product boasts a team-best 15-4 singles record on the year so far, including five wins over SEC foes in the fall. At the No. 2-4 singles spots this spring, he is a perfect 9-0. Wrapping up first this past Sunday in State's win at Tulane in was Colas on court 4, where he cruised comfortably over the Green Wave's Billy Suarez 6-0, 6-2. The victory extended his team-leading singles win streak to 11 consecutive matches and the Bulldogs led TU 2-0 early on.
In doubles, Colas has eight victories this season and is 5-4 in dual matches. He has most recently made the jump from the No. 2 position to No. 1 with new partner and senior leader Giovanni Oradini.
An SEC battle on the road against No. 3 Tennessee (12-1, 1-0 SEC) is next on the docket for Colas and the Bulldogs, as State travels to Knoxville this Friday, February 26. Following that affair, MSU heads to Athens, Ga., to close out its SEC road swing against No. 12 Georgia (5-1, 0-1 SEC) this Sunday, February 28. MSU will be opening SEC play this weekend after its league opener against Arkansas last Friday was postponed due to winter weather.
