Soccer Announces Spring Slate
February 12, 2021 | Soccer
The Bulldogs look to start the second half of their season in late February.
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State soccer program and head coach James Armstrong announced the spring slate for the Bulldogs on Friday.
Â
"We are very excited to announce our spring schedule," said Armstrong. "We are playing some very good teams that will push us to achieve our goal of continuing to develop this group of players. A number of these teams played a fall season and those that didn't will have had some extra time this spring to prepare for their conference competition. We cannot wait to take the field and compete in front of our special fans."
Â
The spring season will be counted as a part of the 2020 season. All statistics will be cumulative with the nine matches played in the fall.
Â
The spring schedule is as follows, with five of the seven taking place in Starkville and all of them taking place in the early to late afternoon.
Â
Spring 2021 Schedule
Sunday, 2/21 vs. Southern Miss (Exhibition), 3 p.m.
Sunday, 2/28 vs. Louisiana (Lafayette), 11:30 a.m.
Sunday, 3/7 at UAB, 1 p.m.
Saturday, 3/13 vs. Arkansas State, 12 p.m.
Saturday, 3/20 vs. Troy, 1 p.m.
Thursday, 4/1 vs. Columbus State, 3 p.m.
Saturday, 4/10 at Alabama, 1 p.m.
Â
The match at Alabama will not count as a Conference matchup.
Â
Fans can expect to see the seven freshmen who saw minutes in the fall to continue to make a significant impact for the Bulldogs. Birna Jóhannsdóttir from Iceland led her team in assists with two while Maddy Anderson, the freshman from Texas, will continue to be the steady netminder for the Bulldogs. The seven freshmen totaled 3,948 minutes in the fall, and six of them were starters. In six of the nine matches, there were five freshmen who earned a starting nod.
Â
Sophomore Onyi Echegini led the team in shots with 21, nine of them being on goal. She along with juniors Monigo Karnley and Hailey Farrington-Bentil lead the team in goals and points with two goals, five points and one assist each. Together, the three have 43 shots in total. Junior Andrea Tyrrell led the squad in minutes, playing all 870 minutes of the season.
Â
Tyrrell along with junior transfer Alyssa D'Aloise will continue to serve as the captains for the team.
Â
The future is bright for the footballers of Mississippi State soccer as they head into the second half of their 2020-21 season.Â
