MSU’s Broska Tabbed Co-SEC Men’s Tennis Player Of The Week
February 10, 2021 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State men's tennis veteran Florian Broska has been named co-SEC Player of the Week the league announced Wednesday. It marks the second time in his career he has earned SEC Player of the Week honors, also doing so in January 2020.
"We are really proud of Flo and what he is doing on and off the court, " MSU head Matt Roberts said. "He has a strong work ethic and that has allowed him to have success in the classroom and develop on the court. Being named SEC Player of the Week is great feedback for him to confirm he is doing the right things day in and day out."
Ranked 87th nationally at present, Broska continued his stellar play to open 2021 this past week, going 3-1 overall to help the Bulldogs improve to 7-1 overall thus far season.
The Eitelborn, Germany, native extended his singles winning streak to seven matches with two more quality wins. On Friday, he ousted TCU's 47th-ranked Luc Fomba 6-4, 6-4 for his second straight top 55 triumph. Sunday, he would battle to give State the lead at 2-1 over Memphis, defeating Jan Pallares 6-1, 6-4, rallying back from a 3-0, two-break deficit in the second set to fuel State's victory over the Tigers.
In doubles, he and partner Nicolas Ocana fell in their match to the highly-touted Horned Frogs on court 1 but he rebounded on Sunday, teaming with Gregor Ramskogler for a 6-1 win against Jackson State to clinch the doubles point.
Since late October, Broska has won 10 of his last 12 singles matches, eight of them in straight sets.
A battle against South Alabama (1-2) is next on the docket for Broska and the Bulldogs, as State gets set to host the Jaguars this Saturday, February 13, at the Rula Tennis Pavilion. Following that affair, MSU opens 2021 SEC action, hosting Arkansas on Friday, February 19.
