Women’s Basketball Closes Out Non-Conference Play with Win over SC State
December 20, 2021 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State dominated South Carolina State from start to finish, defeating the Bulldogs 85-47 to close out the busy weekend and non-conference play.
The Bulldogs got contributions up and down the roster tonight, with six players scoring double figures. Caterrion Thompson and Ashley Jones had their best games at Mississippi State, scoring 15 and 14 points, respectively. Thompson was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs, and she also pulled down a season-high eight rebounds and recorded two steals. Raven Farley also matched her season-high with 12 points, along with a pair of rebounds and two assists.
Denae Carter achieved her third straight double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds to tie a career-high while adding four blocks. Denae is the first MSU player to record three consecutive double-doubles since Jessika Carter did it from Feb. 20-27, 2020.
Rickea Jackson also chimed in with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Myah Taylor tallied 11 points, eight assists, and a pair of steals. Taylor's two steals tonight tie her for 10th-most in the country with 34. Taylor is also tied for sixth in the country for assists per game at 6.5.
In the second quarter, MSU broke the game open by putting together a 21-0 run and eventually outscoring SCSU 23-3 in the frame. The Bulldogs held SC State scoreless in the second period until the final 48 seconds when SC State scored their only bucket of the quarter on a three from the corner.
Mississippi State outscored SC State in every quarter of the contest. The Bulldogs had their best effort of the season on the glass, outrebounding South Carolina State, 52-24. SC State's 24 rebounds were the lowest number an MSU opponent has recorded since New Orleans grabbed just 16 boards on Dec. 2, 2020. Mississippi State also posted their best shooting performance of the year from the free-throw line with 15 made freebies on 75% shooting.

On the rebounding success the last two games
"Slowly but surely, we were starting to attack the paint against these sagging zones and get some inside scoring and some inside-out scoring. When you get them scrambling, they aren't in as good of a rebounding position, so I think it's a combination of both for sure. We were all embarrassed by those rebounding numbers from that [Troy] game, and then we did a little better job of positioning players. The players have really taken over these last two games, in terms of pursuing the glass in Denae and Rickea, and the rest of them - JerKaila, they've all been competing well."
