Bulldogs Win Big Behind A Career Night From Rickea Jackson
December 01, 2021 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – Rickea Jackson had a night to remember on Wednesday with a career-high, 40-points. Her dominant performance helped lead the Bulldogs to a decisive, 102-55 victory over McNeese State and improved the Bulldogs record to 6-1 on the season.
Rickea Jackson became just the 13th player in program history to reach the 40-point mark in a game, the first since Teaira McCowan scored 41 on Dec. 28, 2017 against Louisiana. Her 40 points, 21 coming in the first half, are also the 10th-most points scored in a single game at MSU and the third-most points scored in a game this season in all of Division I. In just 29 minutes of action, Jackson was 18-for-26 (69% from the field) with nine rebounds, two assists and a steal. Her 18 made field goals was the most in a game since McCowan had 19 in December of 2017.
Denae Carter recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Carter's 14 boards also set a new career mark. She added two blocks and two steals to her totals. Joining Carter and Jackson in double figures was Anastasia Hayes, who scored 15 points while adding eight rebounds and seven assists. JerKaila Jordan added 12 points and three blocked shots, her second consecutive game with three blocks. Her 12 blocks this season are tied with Jackson for most on the team. Myah Taylor dished out 10 assists and swiped six steals of her own.
The Bulldogs started hot, opening the contest on a 12-0 run before extending the lead to 28-2 in just seven minutes of action. During that stretch, Jackson scored 11 points, while Jordan added seven. The Dawgs ended the first quarter outsourcing the Cowgirl's 32-9.
A significant factor for the string first frame was the effort on the defensive side. The Dawgs forced nine McNeese State turnovers in the first quarter and scored 17 points off those turnovers. This is the second time the Dawgs have scored more than 30 points in the first quarter this season. The second period was much like the first, as MSU outscored the Cowgirls 24-8.
Mississippi State played excellent team defense throughout the contest, limiting McNeese State to just 30 percent shooting from the field. State also blocked 11 shots which is the third time this season with at least 11 blocks in a game. The Bulldogs also recorded 13 steals and forced 25 turnovers.

On setting the tone early
"It really set the tone and perhaps ratted them a little bit. They're a really good zone defensive team. Maybe it didn't look like it tonight, but we watched enough film against other teams and they're really good with their slides. I think they just got rattled a little bit with that early pressure. I thought we played with great joy and passion. We set the tone early and really didn't let up for most of the game."

"I feel like my teammates trusted in me. [They] got me the ball in my spots, open spots. I feel like it was definitely my teammates, and I feel like our chemistry is getting way better."
