Soccer Adds Standout ECU Transfer, Haley McWhirter

STARKVILLE – Head coach James Armstrong and the Mississippi State soccer program have announced the addition of AAC Rookie of the Year Haley McWhirter, a transfer from East Carolina University.

"We are beyond thrilled to welcome a player of Haley's ability to the Hail State soccer family," Armstrong said. "Haley had an exceptional inaugural collegiate season, and we are excited to add her goal-scoring prowess and creativity to our midfield group."

As a pirate during her 2021 campaign, McWhirter became the first player in ECU history to be named Rookie of the Year by the American Athletic Conference. The midfielder was also selected unanimously for the AAC All-Rookie Team and found a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. Her record-breaking season featured six goals, one assist and 13 points. Her five goals and 11 points in conference play lead all players in the conference, leading to three straight AAC Rookie of the Week honors.

Starting in every game, the prolific freshman netted three game-winners for the Pirates, none more crucial than the 87th winner over Memphis that clinched her team a spot in the conference tournament. Hailing from Magnolia, Texas, the freshman finished fourth in goals by a rookie (six) and fifth in points (13).

Prior to her collegiate debut, McWhirter was ranked 13th in the 2020 Top-Drawer Development Academy League Scorers list and was also selected, more than 20 times, to the Top-Drawer Weekly Standout Players to Watch list.

McWhirter will be joining the Maroon and White this spring.
